Shukla Yajurveda Chapter XV - Selected Statements

1. O powerful king! Without showing any disrespect, give people good instructions that help everybody live in good houses with all necesary things.

 

2. O king! Teach us the art of victory so that we can drive away known and unknown foes.

 

3. O lady! Become skillful in sixteen arts. Forty four years of dedicated (celibacy)  learning make a lady, the possessor of great learning and power. 

 

4. Action brings light of truth (Truth has no value unless people use it). The practice of truth gives ease (Any person who speaks truth always does not have to specially remember what he said on a particular occasion).

 

5. The sweetness of speech like water gives calmness.

 

6. Perseverance leads to various successful efforts.

 

7. Conquest of affliction demands strength (To overcome any problem one requires appropriate strength).

 

8. O man! Gain the stength of wealth, through the extended application of wealth. Acquire strength of knowledge through study. Learn perseverance for conquering a problem.

 

9. O wife! I accept you for your learning, for your willingness to partner me, for your brilliance, and for your riches (health, the popular saying health is wealth).

 

10. O husband! You know all the details about matter and you also know the details of the world which is made up of matter. I accept you for your knowledge as husband.

 

11. All the learned people should help a wife and husband to settle down and lead a happy life.

 

12. O woman! The learned persons are thy overlords. Listen to learned persons. Your husband, healthy and strong in seventeen vital parts of the body will serve you and take care of you on earth.

 

13. Use respectful language for a person, who is pure, intelligent, wise and virtuous.

 

14. O mighty, enligtened vaishya! Have adequate trade relations with others, and bring us all riches.

 

15. O son of a strong man! Become a learned man and vouchsafe great wealth for us.
