Shukla Yajurveda Chapter 14

1. O woman! Use the vast knowledge of art of cooking.

 

2. O woman! All learned persons have to respect you for your contribution to the universe. You give the wealth of children for the universe.

 

3. O woman! Your learned husband bestows the responsibility of the house to you in pursuit of noble deeds. Become a good guardian of the house and children with your knowledge. All learned teachers and preachers should help you in this endeavour and arrange for your protection through the yagnas they do for self protection. 

 

4. O man or woman! Your parents, learned teachers and preachers, prepare you and make you able to acquire all desirable objects. Love water, master the science of fire (energy), cultivate virtuous traits,  recite Gayatri Mantra, live according to seasons and prolong your life.

 

5.O man or woman, Your parents, parents, learned teachers and preachers, prepare you to attain unity with God, the Leader of the Universe. Live in the company of highly learned persons and attain God.

 

6. O young man or woman! Brahmacharya is learning period. (Brahma gave Vedas to the world. Vishnu gave Vedas to Brahma. Brahmacharya is to be given the meaning of learning Vedas or learning in general. In ancient India, persons in brahmacharya aasramam have no family responsibilities. They stay with guru and their food is taken care of by the society in which the gurukul is there. After brahmacharya aasramam, a person takes up the responsibility of Family.) Learn Vedas, the source of happiness from learned teachers and preachers.

 

7. The brahman protects the humanity through knowledge, religion and austerity. Kshatriya provides happiness to humanity by providing  justice and security. The Vaishya is the lord of riches. His provides happiness to humanity by financing and managing  projects that increase wealth. The Shudra is the artisan with the skills. He provides happiness to humanity by using his skill in creating many man-made things. (Shloka 9)

 

8. Like the bull that pulls the cart, every person must develop his body and strength and undertake the duties of a householder.

 

9. The master of three Vedas should praise God through action, contemplation and knowledge.

 

10. O man! You should remove the affliction of your wife. This means you help her to overcome difficulties she faces in her work. A wife should do the same. She should remove the difficulties the husband faces.

 

11. O woman! Increase the store of pure water. It is essential for the life of your husband and family members.

 

12. O woman! You have the charge of the house. Please your husband and other relatives in the capacity.

 

13. O God! Protect my eyes. Protect my ears. Protect my upper gastric tract. Protect my lower gastric tract. Preserve my life. Preserve my soul. The meaning of all prayers is to be applied to oneself only. It is we people we have to protect our body and its organs. Veda is knowledge of living.

 

14. Food gives physical force. Intellect grants strength. Discernment gives freedom. Wisdom gives pleasure.

 

15. O Woman! You rear the progeney like the earth. I accept you for for supporting me in my occupation, for food, for peace, happiness, children and longevity.

 

 

 

From other chapters.

 

10. A vrata gives Deeksha. Deeksha gives dakshina (wealth or reward). Reward gives sraddha (commitment). Commitment(shraddha) gives true benefit. (Ch. 19. Shloka 30).

 

11. Learning is yajna. One who takes up learning by wearing the sacred thread symbolizing the desire to learn commences his second birth.

 

12. We offer food and homage to our parents, grand parents and great-grand parents. Blessed are those people who are taking care of the three generations of their forefathers. (Ch. 19. Shloka 36).
